Year 10 camp

 Yr 10 Camp Blog

Greetings,

Last week (22-25 June) Yr 10s trekked off on an Outdoor Ed. trip to Boyle River Outdoor Ed. centre.

As soon as we arrived, we went into the lodge, we sat down and listened to the mentors about all of the rules and how everything was gonna work, then we separated into our 5 groups.

For breakfast we had many options to pick from including toast, weetbix and many different cereals.

Dinner consisted of many different things from lasagne, rice and pasta.

The sleeping quarters were good. very comfortable and warm

We had a range of indoor and outdoor activities which included walks, high ropes and many other fun activities

The best experience I had on camp was hanging out with my friends and creating new ones.

I was most challenged by the solo.

 supervising and cooking.

Overall it was a great experience and I would love to do it again.

Metal reactions

Today in science we were doing an experiment about metal reactions, In this experiment, we filled one test tube quarter of the way up with sulfuric acid, Then we put a piece of metal salt into that same tube while putting another test tube over the one with the acid in it to hold all of the gas in. Then we held a burning splint near the top of the test tube. The positive result was a pop sound it made that sound because the hydrogen reacted with the oxygen in the air to cause a small explosion.

Today during science we did another gas experiment, first, we added calcium carbonate into one tube and lime water into the other then we put a tube into the water, after that we put acid into the tube with the calcium carbonate and quickly put the bung into the tube. To know if it was working or to see the results the water would start to cloud up and turn gray.

Today in science we did a glowing splint experiment. When we were doing the glowing splint experiment firstly we had to light the splint with a bunsen burner we let it burn for a bit then blew it out. The next thing we did was put the splint into a test tube that had hydrogen peroxide and magnesium dioxide in it. These two chemicals together produced oxygen. The splint relit because it was exposed to the oxygen in the test tube. The result proved that the gas in the tube was oxygen.

Social studies

So far during social studies, we have been learning about plastic pollution and ways be can protect our ecosystem and the earth. We have also been reading articles about the earth on a site called "Happy broadcast" which is a news channel that only has positive news.

So Far during social studies, we have been learning about the ocean During one of the videos I seen the harm we have caused the ocean and the pollution we have created I also learnt that they put trackers on rubbish so they can see where the rubbish travels  I think that the video shows us why we need to clean and protect the ocean. It also showed us how much we are damaging the ocean and how we are killing marine life.

Metallic lattice

Today during science I made a 3d shaped metallic lattice out of popsicle sticks and play-doh.

Metallic lattice is the type of bond that is formed to create the structure of metals. In this type of bond, the positively charged metal ions arrange themselves in rows. Their electrons are shared among all of them and circulate around the rows in a delocalized way, freely moving.

This is the work that I created.

Ethiopia - 1985

Where is Ethiopia?

Ethiopia is located in east Africa or also known as the horn of Africa.

What was causing the famine at this time?

A perfect storm of adverse events led to the famine because of recurring drought, failed harvests, food scarcity, conflict that kept aid from reaching people in occupied territory, and government policies that relocated families and routed relief to certain areas.

Acid rain experiment

 What is Acid rain?

Acid rain is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, meaning that it has elevated levels of hydrogen ions. It can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals and infrastructure.

The aim of this experiment is to observe the effects of Acid rain.

We are going to be using Petal, Calcium carbonate, Apple , Universal indicator and bromothymol blue.

In our petri dish we will place the items around the edge, and we will wet the dry ingredients with drops of water. And then we will put a weigh boat in the middle.

Add a spatula of sodium sulfate to the weigh boat. Also add 5 drops of sulfuric acid then quickly close the lid.

What happened?

What I seen happen was that the Universal indicator changed colour and went from green to pink and the Bromothymol blue changed colour and went from blue to yellow.

Give peace a chance - John lennon

Today we are listening to songs that were trying to stop the war in Vietnam and create peace around the world, the song that I listened to was Give peace a chance by John Lennon my opinion on what the song means is that we should start spreading peace around and give peace a chance. This song was played at a concert called the Woodstock which was held on the 15th of august 1969  where over 400,000 people attended, mostly everyone at the concerts were hippy's or protesters who where trying to spread awareness about creating peace and to try stop the war in Vietnam because they seen no point in it.                                                                                                                                                                                                               Give Peace a Chance - Apex Art Lab

Atomic science: Periodic table

What does the Periodic table show us?

The periodic table shows all the elements and their physical properties it is arranged based on atomic numbers and electron arrangement. On the Periodic table there are mass numbers, mass numbers are the total of the protons and Neutrons present in the nucleus of the atom there are also

What are Alkali metals?

Alkali metals sit in level one on the periodic table, they also react with everything because they only have one electron in there outer shell.

What did we see during the experiment?

When the alkaline metal was added to the cold water and the universal indicator. Then it started to float around once it floated around for a bit it caught on fire. It caught on fire because the metal only has one electron in its outer shell so the metal reacted to get rid of its electrons.

Unwind

Unwind

- How do you think this story will be written?

I think this story is about a dystopian world that is falling apart.

- Why do you think the story is entitled as it is?

I think it is called Unwind because I think that they are going to try and unwind something bad that had happened.

- Where do you think the story will take place?

I think this story will take place in a abandoned city.

- What time period do you think the story is set in?

I think this story is set in a couple years into the future.
