Wonder - Film study - Workshop 3

Atmosphere/ Mood - How you feel in a situation.

  • Scene 1 - Auggies first day at school - When Auggie walks into the class everyone stares at him. When he asks to sit down Amos says that the seat is saved
Angles/Camera shots - Long shot/ Eye level of the class. Close up of Auggie to see his emotional reactions.

Lighting & Colour -
Palette -  Colours used in a scene, eg a nature palette has colours coming from nature - Brown, Green, ETC, Warm/Cold - Warm makes you feel safe/comfortable - Cold makes us feel clean/ Sterile.
Bright - Vibrant, jumps out.
Dull - Faded, muted, blends in.
Natural light - Sun/ Moon light.
Artificial light - Man mad light. E.g Light-bulbs.

Lighting & Colour - Warm - makes the class room feel safe & welcoming.
- Bright colours - Gives the room energy & life.
- Natural light coming through the windows.
Effect on the viewer - Happy, Chilled, Exciting, Educational, Inspiring.
Directors - Wants to create a happy & safe atmosphere in Mr browns class. Even though it feels this way, with Juliens & Amos's behaviour is unkind.

In the scene of August's first day of school, Lighting & Colour are used to create a safe and welcoming classroom environment. For instance, bright  warm colours are used on the walls and natural light come through the windows to make the space look lively. This makes the audience feel  excited, inspired  and that the space is education and supportive for learning. This was done to show Mr Brown had created a classroom space that would be welcoming to new students just like Auggie. Coinciding with this is the use of body language. The children are sitting up, smiling & paying lots of attention towards Mr Brown, They are learning ready.  This reminds the audience of the theme kindness because the lighting & colour make the room welcoming for all students

Biography - Rat dissection.

A couple of days ago during science, we were learning about the insides of our body and organs we have in our selves. As an experiment, we cut and dissected a Rat to see what organs they had in them, we had 3 tools to dissect the Rat with and they where the scalpel, Scissors & tweezers, to start off we sliced through the skin of the Rat then we slowed to rip the skin back so we didn't damage, when the rat was fully opened we started to have a look through we saw the heart, the liver, the small intestines the large intestines, the gall bladder, and the rectum they were the main organs we were looking at. In my opinion, dissecting a Rat wasn't the grossest thing out there but it was gross at some times.

Wonder - Film study - Workshop two

A, Shot 1 - Fight scene - Jack fighting Julien because Julien called Auggie a freak.
- Teacher pulling Jack of Julien - Mr Brown..
- Camera techniques -
Dutch tilt -  Shows something is not right.
Low angle -   Makes Julien look weak and vulnerable.

Viewer feels -  Shocked- didn't expect Jacks reaction,
Surprised, Concerned, Uneasy .

Director - surprised,  Sad, Worried for Jack.

Other techniques - Music - Creates atmosphere, Minor slow motion - makes more intense.

Sexxxxxxxxxy Paragraphs:
In the film Wonder,  Low angle shots where used effectively. This is demonstrated in the scene where Jack attacks Julien because he called Auggie a a freak. In this scene a low angle dutch tilt shot is used to make Jack look stronger and make Julien look weak and vulnerable. This makes the audience feel shocked, surprised and concerned because we didn't expect a violent reaction for Jack who has not shown aggressive up until this point. The purpose of this was to show the theme of kindness as Jacks finally stands up for Auggie. combined with this is the use of soft, quiet & minor music and the use of slow motion to create atmosphere and the event feel more intense. This can be contrasted to the nature reserve  fight scene where Auggie now shows kindness by stand ups for Jack.

B, shot 2 - Fight scene - nature reserve - Auggie makes friends, high 5 - no plague, Jack, Amos & others. They beat up & ran away from 7th graders.

- Wide angle, long shot -  makes us feel like we are a bystander watching an important moment, the emotions are the characters, not ours.

- Audience - Joyful, proud, cheerful, ecstatic, has friends.

Director -  shows that Auggie is finally fitting in, shows theme or importance of friend ship or 'kindness'

Other techniques - Lighting - use of shadow - Silhouette,  the boys feel like they are all in it together .

Wonder - Film study - Workshop one

Kindness -
When people are respecting, caring, helpful & include others.
Example 1 - Fight scene at the nature reserve.

  • Amos & the boys rescue Auggie & Jack from the bullies. At the end they high five Auggie .
  • Shows kindness because because up until this point the others hadn't touched him or treated him with respect.
  • Theme of kindness is important because through it Auggie makes friends, is more confident and happier.
Cafeteria scene -
  • Shows theme of kindness because Summer leaves the friends she has been sitting with who were being bystanders & went to sit with Auggie because he was alone
  • Summer helps rebuild Auggies trust in friendships. if she hadn't  shown kindness by sitting with him, he wouldn't have learnt to make new friends and move on.
Importance of family & friendship -
Through these relationships our characters build trust, resilience and self confidence.
Example 1 -
  • Scene where Auggie cuts off his padawan braid.
- Link to importance of family because shows that when Auggie is feeling sad/alone/depressed that he has a support network to build his resilience.
- Home is Auggies safe & supportive place . He needs this relationship with his parents to help him build confidence to make new friends.
Example 1 -
When Jack punches Jullien for calling Auggie a freak.
- Shows importance of friendship because Jack wasn't willing  to let Jullien bully Auggie anymore. Auggie is a real friend to jack, where Jullien is  the the type of friend that puts you down if you don't agree with him.
- Is important because it shows how real friends treat each other, they build trust and can forgive each other.

Being right vs being popular -
Doing the right thing, even if no one is watching or when no one else is doing it.
Example 1 - Jullien bullies Auggie.
- Jullien chooses to do things to be popular rather then doing the right thing, He calls Auggie names, Hides notes in his locker & tells Auggie he should kill himself. Jullien is the most popular boy in hiss class so when he chooses to be mean that becomes the thing to do.
- Jullien shows importance of being right over being popular because
through his actions he is removed from the school & loses his friends. Juxtaposed to this will. He decided he would rather be kind to Auggie and as a result keeps all his friends & isn't kicked out.

Wonder - Film study

Intro - Close - up,
spaceman jumping into the shot, slow-motion shot to give the feeling that we are in space....
- Intro symbol of the Astronaut helmet, covers his face, represents the barrier August puts between himself & the world.
- Music- starts quiet, slow but the tempo & dynamics increase to build energy in the scene. We hear a radio of ground control talking to the Astronaut.
- The next camera shot is a tracking shot as we move away from the figure. Who is now a boy in a helmet bouncing on his bed.
-  Close-up shows us Auggies "Reality" or view of the world but as we pull back we see the real world.

Structure:
1st Narrator  - Auggie
2nd Narrator - Via
3rd Narrator - Jack will
4th Narrator - Miranda
Last Narrator - Auggie

Quotes -
Dad/Nate - "Its like leading a lamb to slaughter"
Summer -  " When being given the choice between being right or kind, choose kind"

2 minutes in - Building suspense as we still haven't seen the boys face. We don't know whats wrong, but the hints are bad - Hospital scene, Helmet, Tags, School conversation, Auggies dialogue in the voice over.

1st significant  scene - Auggie meets Jack will, Julian, and Charlotte.

Star Wars -
A symbol of Auggie wanting people to treat him him normally - A safe place. In the star wars universe there a lots of weird looking people so no one stares at them
